1 killed in Texas as damaging storms tear across South

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Violent storms killed one person in Texas early Tuesday as hail pelted communities and high winds knocked trees into power poles elsewhere in the South. Authorities issued a flurry of tornado warnings at the start of what could be two days of violent weather in the region.

In eastern Texas, Whitehouse Fire Chief Madison Johnson confirmed a person was killed as storms moved through early Tuesday. Officials did not immediately release further details about the death, though they said at least four homes in the area had trees fall on top of them.

More than 46,000 homes and businesses were without power Tuesday afternoon from eastern Texas to central Alabama. Lightning struck a flea market in the north Alabama community of Lacey’s Spring, causing a fire that gutted the building, news outlets reported, and rising water in Mobile Bay covered part of a ramp on Interstate 10. Some counties where tornado warnings had been issued reported trees down and homes damaged. No injuries were reported.

The Storm Prediction Center said severe storms with powerful tornados were possible across a broad area stretching from southern Mississippi to the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina. The area most at risk included more than 8 million people in the Alabama cities of Mobile and Montgomery; Tallahassee, Florida; and Columbus and Savannah in Georgia.

Elsewhere in Texas, one person was injured when the storms swept through Johnson County, about 40 miles southwest of Dallas.

Forecasters said the threat of damaging weather will move to the north on Wednesday with severe storms possible across an area stretching from western Alabama to the western tip of the Carolinas. More than 10 million people in metro areas including Atlanta; Birmingham; and Chattanooga, Tennessee, will be at risk, the Storm Prediction Center said.

Springtime often brings strong storms to the Southeast, and the region has faced a barrage of weather recently that included a tornado last month in metro New Orleans, where one person died, and storms that killed at least two people in the Florida Panhandle last week.

Police: Man shot in Houston after running over worker, stabbing another

HOUSTON (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Officers shot and wounded a man early Tuesday when he charged at them with a knife after he killed a construction worker with the worker’s own stolen truck, crashed into the lobby of a Houston high-rise and then stabbed someone else, police said.

The suspect carjacked the 59-year-old construction worker’s truck shortly before 3:30 a.m. April 5, police said. As the victim was walking to the office of the luxury apartment building west of downtown where he had been working, the suspect ran him over and then crashed into the lobby of the building, police Chief Troy Finner said.

The construction worker, whose name police didn’t release, died at the scene.

The building’s concierge, who was at a desk in the lobby, wasn’t hurt during the initial crash and barricaded himself inside an office. The suspect then crashed the truck into the office, but the concierge was left uninjured again, Finner said.

The suspect then stabbed the back of a 51-year-old man who came to the lobby area after the crashes, Finner said. That victim was in stable condition.

Officers found the suspect walking down the street and told him multiple times to drop the knife but he refused and charged, leading them to shoot him, the chief said.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was shot at least twice but managed to get up, leading the officers to use their stun guns to subdue him, Finner said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was in surgery, police said.

Weatherford woman arrested, accused of shooting her neighbor

WEATHERFORD, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) — A Weatherford woman was arrested after allegedly shooting her neighbor Saturday night, police said.

The incident was reported just before 11 p.m. April 2 in the 100 block of Hyde Away Lane, Parker County Sheriff Russ Authier said.

Officials said the victim — whose identity has not been released — reported he and his neighbor, 57-year-old Angela Ruth Harvey-Peters, were talking when he told her he was going home and she pointed a revolver at him and told him he wasn’t leaving.

Angela Ruth Harvey-Peters (Source: Parker County Sheriff’s Office)

The victim then reported he pushed the gun away from Harvey-Peters when she fired a single shot, striking him in the right calf. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for a non-life threatening injury and Harvey-Peters was taken into custody, officials said.

Officials said Harvey-Peters initially reported the victim made an advance toward her, and she told him to “get out.”

She then claimed the pair began wrestling over a .22 revolver and that’s when the victim shot himself and left, officials said.

Investigators said Harvey Peter’s account of the incident “changed multiple times” and later implicated herself by stating she had shot the victim. Sheriff’s deputies also noted Harvey-Peters appeared to be heavily intoxicated and “could barely stand on her own.”

Harvey-Peters was booked into the Parker County Jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and her bond was set at $20,000.

Gardening 101: All About Begonias

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – In the mix of summer flowers, I almost always include some begonias. I like how they hold their flower through the heat. Breeders provide the dark leaf variety for full sun and a light green variety for shaded areas. The plants are relatively cheap, and you can buy them by the tray.

But if that is all you know about begonias, then you don’t know begonias.

What you see in the garden center is a commercialized version of a very successful, versatile species of flowering plant that is found along the tropical belt of the world. There are hundreds of discovered varieties divided among eight different families of the plant. And the variety of the begonia is breathtaking; you could easily put some right next to each other and not have a clue they are from the same family of flowering perennial tropical plants.

If you don’t believe me, you can see for yourself. Sort of. The biggest collection of begonias is stored at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. The plants are kept in two different greenhouses that sit just off the Japanese Garden. One greenhouse is for the hybrids (versions of begonias breed for looks but not found in nature). The other is for species of begonias, plants actually found in the wild. The species are carefully breed to retain a seed bank for these plants. The seeds are sent down to Houston for permanent storage.

The greenhouses are in a “working” area of the garden, off limits to visitors. You can get a tour of the begonia collection by appointment if you ask.

Another great way to enjoy this world class begonia collection is to buy in. They sell a large quantity of hybrid begonias of many varieties in their annual plant sale. There is one this coming Friday/Saturday (April 8th-9th). I will warn you, come VERY early if you want to buy a begonia. People have been known to travel very far to get to this sale, they almost always sell out.

Since a begonia is a tropical plant, they can be grown in the outdoors (in partial shade at least if not complete shade) during our summers. They have to winter indoors next to a window to survive into the next year. They can live for decades, but do like moderate to high humidity so if you have a window in the bathroom that would be ideal.

If you can get ahold of one of the rare examples of this plant, I promise it will dazzle your friends. Some examples of these beauties are simply breathtaking, most of their attraction is in their unusual leaf structure and color. And when you tell them it is a version of the commercialized begonia they’ll likely won’t believe you at first.

Airlines reduce cancellations, but US flight problems linger

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Air travel in the United States improved Monday after a rocky weekend that left thousands of flyers stranded by thunderstorms in Florida, technology problems at the busiest domestic airline and labor problems at another carrier.

However, airlines that do much of their flying in Florida were still struggling Monday, especially Spirit Airlines.

And airlines were bracing for another round of storms that were forecast to hit the Dallas area — home to American and Southwest — Monday night.

Airlines scrubbed about 650 U.S. flights by midafternoon Monday, according to tracking service FlightAware.com. That followed the cancellation of more than 3,500 flights — about one in every 13 — over the weekend.

Thunderstorms led the Federal Aviation Administration to limit flights over much of Florida and briefly halt flights at several airports in the state on Saturday. That caused ripple effects across the country for the rest of the weekend, and some travelers reported having to wait before they could be put on another flight.

“It’s spring-break season, so unfortunately there is no worse place to have bad weather than Florida right now,” Henry Harteveldt, a travel-industry analyst for Atmosphere Research, said Monday. “The airlines are scrambling to get people where they want to go, they’re working to get planes to and from Florida. It’s going to take a couple days.”

On Monday, Spirit, which is based in Miramar, Florida, canceled about 250 flights, or 30% of its schedule. JetBlue Airways, which flies frequently between Florida and the Northeast, canceled about 140 flights, or 13% of its total for the day.

Spirit did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Southwest Airlines, which operates more domestic flights than any airline, was doing much better on Monday — about 60 cancellations, 1% of its schedule, after scrubbing more than 900 flights, or about 13% of its total, Saturday and Sunday. The airline also suffered what it called intermittent technology problems over the weekend.

Southwest’s unusual point-to-point route map means that many of its planes stop in Florida at some point during a normal day. By contrast, American, Delta and United run so-called hub-and-spoke networks in which flights radiate outward from a few key airports. That keeps planes in one part of the country insulated from bad weather in other places.

Alaska Airlines, the fifth-largest U.S. carrier, canceled about 40 flights or 5% of its schedule Monday. Over the weekend, the airline seemed to blame the pilots’ union. Off-duty pilots have picketed at airports and an investor conference by the Seattle-based airline to protest the slow pace of contract negotiations over the past three years.

2 men sentenced in $1.5 million Apple gift card scheme

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) — Two men behind a $1.5 million Apple gift card scheme have been sentenced to a combined 13 years in federal prison.

Syed Ali, 29, and Jason Tout-Puissant, 27, both pleaded guilty to wire fraud in 2019.

United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Chad E. Meacham said Ali was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison and Tout-Puissant was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $1.26 million in restitution to Apple.

According to plea papers, Tout-Puissant admitted that he stole multiple devices from the Apple store in Southlake, then logged onto the store’s WiFi network from outside, and loaded thousands of dollars of fraudulent store credits onto gift cards.

Meacham said Tout-Puissant then loaded the gift cards onto Apple Passbook — an application that generates QR codes for the value of gift cards — and sent screenshots of those codes to Ali.

Ali admitted in his plea papers that he and an unindicted coconspirator used the QR codes to purchase Apple products from brick-and-mortar retail stores in New York.

The conspiracy reportedly involved over $1.5 million in fraudulently obtained Apple gift cards.

Dallas chief says 16 hurt in ‘Epic Easter’ concert shooting, city needs better permit laws

The concert event on Saturday night did not have a permit and “should not have been allowed to happen in the first place,” the Dallas police chief said.

from Dallas https://ift.tt/Zx6n2T0

Dallas Police Chief: Event Where Deadly Mass Shooting Occurred Did Not Have Permit

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – During a Monday afternoon press conference, Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said event organizers did not have a valid permit for the concert where a deadly mass shooting happened over the weekend.

The Chief said there were seven off-duty officers working at the trail ride and concert on 5050 Cleveland Road in Dallas. While the officer went through the proper approval concert to work the event, they should not have been providing security or involved with that event or any other that did not have a permit from the city. The Chief said they’re looking into the department’s internal policies regarding approvals for those type of jobs.

“This crime is a prime example that non-permitted events can lead to crime and violence,” Garcia said. “This could happen at any event – but a permit and with proper oversight we can make sure they are as safe as possible.”

Garcia said there currently isn’t a strong promoter ordinance in place but that he’s hoping to work with city officials and the city attorney’s office to change that.

One person was killed and some 16 others were injured after the shooting at the Southern Dallas concert in the early morning hours of April 2. Kealon Gilmore was found lying near the stage with a gunshot wound to the head. The 26-year-old died at the scene.

Officials said the officer that were working security left before the event was over — they’re now looking into why.

A flyer described the event as an all-day field party, featuring several rap performers including Memphis-based rapper Big Boogie, and was believed to have been attended by several thousand people. Police said their preliminary investigation revealed that the incident began after someone fired a gun in the air and another person then fired a gun into the crowd.

Anyone with information about the shooting is being asked to contact Detective Christopher Anderson at 214-671-3616 or send an email to c.anderson@dallascityhall.com.

First Alert Weather Day declared for Monday, April 4

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Tonight: We’re just starting to see storms firing up out west. These will move east over the next few hours and could produce some hail and gusty winds, but as they continue moving east (closer to the metroplex) they will encounter a capped environment and weaken/diminish.

Tomorrow: First Alert Weather Day for tomorrow afternoon/evening. It will be a cloudy, warm and breezy start to the day but a cap is in place until the afternoon, so no severe weather is expected until late afternoon.

This will be a quick event, but all modes of severe weather look possible – large hail, damaging wind, and even a few tornadoes. There is now a level 3 enhanced risk for a good portion of North Texas, including all of the metroplex.

As we watch for storms to develop out west and move east, we want to see how quickly it takes the storms to congeal and become more linear. The clustered storms are concerning for some of the largest hail and most significant tornado threat; when the storms become linear, the damaging wind threat goes up, and the hail threat and “spin up” tornado threat is still there.

This will be our third Monday in a row where severe weather is impacting North Texas. After Monday, the rest of the week will be more calm. Tuesday is the warmest day before a stronger cold front knocks highs into the upper 60s and low 70s for the second half of the week.

Doncic leads Mavericks to 118-112 victory over Bucks

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Luka Doncic continues to feel right at home when he’s facing the Milwaukee Bucks, even when his Dallas Mavericks are on the road facing a fourth-quarter deficit.

Doncic scored 32 points and matched a season high with 15 assists to help the Mavericks defeat Giannis Antetokounmpo and the defending champion Bucks 118-112 on Sunday.

“Obviously, when you play against superstars like Giannis today, you always have extra motivation,” Doncic said. “He’s a champion, a two-time MVP.”

Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Milwaukee was essentially at full strength Sunday after resting all of its usual starters in a 153-119 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.

Doncic flirted with a triple-double before finishing with eight rebounds. In six career games against the Bucks, Doncic has averaged 26.8 points, 11.3 assists and 9.2 rebounds with three triple-doubles.

“He’s one of the most talented players in the league, one of the most talented players probably ever to play this game,” Antetokounmpo said.

Antetokounmpo added that “we tried to make it tough for him, but he played well.”

Dallas’ Dwight Powell added 22 points and 13 rebounds — one off his career high — and the Mavericks bounced back two days after a 135-103 loss at Washington.

“On the road against the champs, it’s a hard place to win, especially after we had that performance in Washington,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said. “This group in the locker room knows they can respond.”

After a basket by Bobby Portis briefly gave the Bucks a one-point lead early in the fourth, Doncic led the Mavericks back by scoring or assisting on each of Dallas’ first 11 points in the final period.

Doncic hit a 3-pointer to put the Mavericks back ahead 93-91 with 9:04 left. He made a pair of free throws just over a minute later to make it 95-91. He capped the 8-0 run by finding Dorian Finney-Smith for a corner 3-pointer with 7:20 left.

Antetokounmpo made two free throws to cut the margin to five, but Doncic found Reggie Bullock for a corner 3-pointer that extended Dallas’ lead to 101-93 with 6:55 remaining.

“He’s able to pick apart whatever a defense is throwing at him,” said Jalen Brunson, who scored 15 points for the Mavericks.

Milwaukee’s Jrue Holiday sank a 3-pointer to cut the Mavericks’ lead to 101-98 midway through the fourth quarter. Powell responded by converting a conventional three-point play to make it 104-98 with 5:52 remaining.

The margin didn’t drop below five the rest of the way.

Bullock had 16 points and Finney-Smith and Spencer Dinwiddie had 11 each for the Mavericks. Holiday had 20, Portis 17, Brook Lopez 14, Pat Connaughton 12 and Khris Middleton 11 for the Bucks.

TIP-INS

Mavericks: Maxi Kleber didn’t play due to a sore right ankle. … Mavericks coach Jason Kidd congratulated former Dallas coach Del Harris for his selection to the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame on Saturday, but said it’s about time another former Mavericks coach gets honored as well. “We’re all excited for him and his family because he should have been in there a long time ago,” Kidd said before the game. “The next guy we have to try to get in is Dick Motta. He should be in, too, a coach that maybe didn’t do the politic thing, but he came to work every day and so he’s the one that should be in the Hall of Fame next. Hopefully we can get him in.” … This was Kidd’s first game in Milwaukee as a visiting head coach since the end of his own Bucks tenure. Kidd, who’s in his first season with Dallas, coached the Bucks from 2015-18.

Bucks: Antetokounmpo’s season scoring average remained at 30.1 points. He entered the day ranked second in the league to LeBron James (30.3). Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid was averaging 30.0 points. Antetokounmpo has never won the scoring title.

CLOSE CALL

The Mavericks were leading 106-101 with 4:47 left when Holiday was called for fouling Doncic on a 3-point attempt. The Bucks challenged the call, but officials determined after looking at the replay that Holiday had made contact with Doncic’s head.

Doncic made all three of his ensuing free throws.

“Jrue told me after the game, ‘You’re welcome for the haircut,’” Doncic quipped. “But he got me a little bit, though. I think that’s a foul.”

UP NEXT

Mavericks: At Detroit on Wednesday. The Mavericks will be completing a four-game trip before finishing the regular season with two home games.

Bucks: At Chicago on Tuesday. The Bucks are 3-0 against the Bulls this season.

Southlake Police arrest man for deadly conduct in connection with road rage incident

SOUTHLAKE, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Southlake Police arrested Adrian Hill, 44, for deadly conduct in connection with a road rage incident last night that stemmed from a reported hit and run accident.

Adrian Hill was arrested by Southlake Police for deadly conduct in relation to a road rage incident. (credit: Southlake DPS)

Just before 9:00 pm last night, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Stockton Drive after a woman reported that her vehicle was struck by a dark-colored SUV while she and her family were stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of W. Kirkwood Blvd. and the SH 114 service road. The caller reported the SUV then sped off without stopping.

The caller’s husband, who officers later identified as Adrian Hill, followed the SUV but lost sight of it when it turned onto Stockton Drive.

Shortly thereafter, Hill located a black SUV parked in the driveway of a residence in the 200 block of Stockton Drive. Believing this was the vehicle involved in the accident a few minutes earlier; Hill parked in the driveway of the residence and exited his vehicle with a firearm.

As the man and woman inside of the black SUV exited their vehicle parked in the driveway of their residence, they saw Hill approaching them with a firearm. In response, the male resident pulled out a pocketknife. He and Hill became engaged in a physical altercation, which resulted in both the resident and Hill sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.

At some point during the altercation, Hill fired a round from his firearm in the direction of the residents’ vehicle and home. The fired round did not strike anyone, and it was recovered by police at the scene.

Officers have determined the man and woman were not involved in the earlier hit and run accident with Hill, nor were they in the area of Kirkwood Blvd and the SH 114 service road at the time the accident occurred. The vehicle reportedly involved in the hit and run accident has not been located at this time.

Fort Worth Police seize $50K, guns, and drugs in massive bust

Narcotics officers were watching a suspected drug house in Northwest Fort Worth when two different vehicles drove by and made significant drug purchases.

Police made a traffic stop on the first vehicle, seizing guns and drugs.

The second suspect left the house and stopped at a nearby convenience store to get a drink. As officers were watching him inside, a marked police car happened to pull up to the store. The suspect walked out, walked past the car loaded with drugs and stolen guns, and kept going.

He never came back.

Officers couldn’t break into the car without a warrant and probable cause, so they brought in a drug-sniffing K9, who alerted on the car.

Police got a warrant and searched the car, where they found the stolen guns and drugs.

Investigators said they have identified the suspect and are working to arrest him.

“This represents countless hours by our narcotics officers working nearly around the clock to seize all these drugs and recover the stolen weapons,” said Officer Buddy Calzada.

DFW Airport Program Helps Children With Autism Get Real-Life Airplane Experience

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – After two years off due to the pandemic, the “It’s Cool To Fly American” program is back to help hundreds of families with children who have autism get real-life airport and airplane experience.

According to the CDC, about one in 44 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Certain things, such as traveling, can be hard for them to endure.

“My daughter has ADHD, so being on an airplane you have to be respectful, calm and my biggest concern is she has a lot of energy so I’m concerned she’s going to run up and down the aisles,” said Janet Diorio. Her 8-year-old daughter Caroline is on the autism spectrum and Janet wanted to see how she would act while traveling on an airplane.

“We just wanted to give my daughter kind of a trial run, and this is a great program to see how she is going to respond when… the time does come to fly,” Janet said.

American Airlines’ program gives parents and their children a mock traveling experience, including checking in, going through security, waiting at the gate, and boarding.

The hustle and bustle of a crowded airport can be a lot for these kids, so this real-life scenario helps parents gauge how their children respond.

Jim Moses, the Vice President of DFW Hub for American Airlines, said, “[It’s important], for families with special needs, to make it as real as possible… without actually taking off. I believe now as travel demand has really started to increase and people are really looking forward to traveling again, it’s even more important.”

Now comes the real test; getting on an airplane, going through the motions, and finally, the airplane moves. It taxis for about half an hour, speeding and slowing down.

Mansfield parent Mayra Cabrela said, “So far, they’ve done amazing, everybody’s been so kind and helpful and it’s just been a great experience for us.”

While some children were restless, the majority seemed to handle the mock flight really well.

This opportunity is available just once a year at nine airports across the country.

Porzingis Scores 24 Against Mavericks As Wizards Win 135-103

WASHINGTON (AP) — Once introductions for the game against the Dallas Mavericks were complete Friday night, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope delivered a direct message to Washington Wizards teammate Kristaps Porzingis.

“We called up the huddle and I told him, ‘KP, since they let you go, we’re going to beat them up for you,’” Caldwell-Pope said. “That was the first thing I said to him, and we did exactly that.”

Porzingis had 24 points and nine rebounds in his first game against his former team, helping Washington roll past Dallas 135-103.

Caldwell-Pope scored a season-high 35 points and Rui Hachimura added 21 for Washington, which won for the fourth time in five games despite being eliminated from playoff contention a day earlier.

Luka Doncic had 36 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Dallas, which fell a half-game behind Golden State for third place in the Western Conference. Jalen Brunson had 21 points for the Mavericks, who fell short of moving 20 games over .500 for the first time since their 2010-11 title season.

Dallas coach Jason Kidd was ejected when he was called for two technical fouls with 8:47 remaining and the Mavericks trailing 105-85.

“Tony (Brothers), he’s thrown me out as a player and now he’s thrown me out as a coach,” Kidd said. “What I said to him was, ‘Whose ball is it?’ And he took that personal, unfortunately, and threw me out. It happens.”

Washington acquired Porzingis in a Feb. 10 trade deadline deal for forward Davis Bertans and guard Spencer Dinwiddie. Porzingis averaged 20.0 points and 8.8 rebounds over parts of three seasons with the Mavericks.

“Everybody had my back today,” Porzingis said. “They knew it was — I don’t want to say it was a personal game, but it’s always fun to compete against your former team.”

Dinwiddie had eight points in 23 minutes in his first game against the Wizards since the deal, while Bertans played 10 scoreless minutes.

Washington’s postseason hopes ended Thursday when Atlanta defeated Cleveland, the third time in four years it has missed the playoffs. But the Wizards wasted little time taking control against Dallas, as Caldwell-Pope scored the first five points to take a lead Washington never relinquished.

“He got going early,” Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. said of Caldwell-Pope, who was 6 of 11 from 3-point range. “He didn’t force the issue. He just took advantage of the shots that were presented to him. Once he sees a couple go in, now he’s shooting into a big basket. He’s had nights like that throughout his career.

“When you get hot like that, it’s good to take a heat check.”

The Wizards led 67-53 at the half and eventually extended their advantage to 26 after a 3-pointer by Porzingis made it 88-62. Dallas cut the deficit in half with a 16-3 run, but Washington then sealed it with a 21-7 burst that included Kidd’s ejection to send Dallas to a loss two days after it locked up a playoff berth.

“Sometimes (when you) clinch, there’s a time to relax, and I think we relaxed,” Kidd said. “We didn’t play very well. Luka scored the ball, but defensively we have to get back to the way things were before the (All-Star) break.”

INJURIES

Dallas was without Gs Sterling Brown and Trey Burke, who are in the league’s health and safety protocols. G Frank Ntilikina (sprained right ankle) had two points in three minutes after missing Wednesday’s game at Cleveland.

Washington remained without F Kyle Kuzma (knee), who missed his eighth consecutive game.

UP NEXT

Mavericks: Continue a four-game road trip Sunday at Milwaukee.

Wizards: Play the first of three consecutive road games Sunday at Boston.

1 Dead In Overnight Dallas House Fire

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – One person is dead after a house in Southeast Dallas went up in flames early this morning.

On Saturday, April 2, 2021 at about 2:15 a.m., Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a 911 call about a structure fire at a single-story home located in the 6800 block of Day Street.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they noticed heavy smoke pouring out of the front of the house. Neighbors told them that someone may still have been inside, so attack teams deployed handlines and moved in for search and suppression operations.

Fire had spread through a large part of the house by the time firefighters made entry, but they were eventually able to get it under control. Unfortunately, during the process, they found the unresponsive body of an adult man in a rear bedroom. He was confirmed deceased.

Investigators believe the fire originated in the home’s kitchen area and spread to multiple rooms in the house as it left behind significant damage throughout. The cause of the fire will be listed as undetermined pending a final ruling from the Medical Examiner on the victim’s cause of death.

Sign Language Interpreter Program At TCC Gets Boost From ‘CODA’

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – Administrators with the Sign Language Interpreting program at Tarrant County College said they are on a recruiting blitz to train more professional sign language interpreters, and they are getting a little extra help from all the recent Oscars buzz surrounding the movie “CODA.”

CODA is an acronym that stands for Children Of Deaf Adults and the movie highlights the struggles that deaf and hard-of-hearing families face daily.

TCC officials say the movie has brought to light that there are too few interpreters in the state of Texas. They are hoping the conversation will lead to much more interest in the field.

Cheryl Sohns is a professor in the program and said they are already seeing an increase in interest. “I would say it’s causing classes to increase. A lot of students in the classes saw the ‘CODA’ story and that it won. That’s going to increase the number of people that might be interested in coming into the profession.”

TCC is only 1 of 4 accredited colleges in the country that offers a professional interpreter degree in 2 years. They estimate that in Texas, there is only 1 interpreter for every 600 deaf or hard of hearing individuals.

Randal King is also a professor in the program and said interpreters are needed in all kinds of settings. “For example, in the hospital. It’s so important to have an interpreter there or for a doctors appointment, you know? If they can’t find an interpreter the doctors appointment has to be rescheduled.”

Sohns added, “Interpreters are not just helpers. Interpreters are language facilitators, and it’s important that they are properly trained.”

Both King and Sohns said the career is not just in demand, but also very rewarding.

King said, “I mean, interpreters here do well. They are very successful.”

Sohns followed up by saying, “They could make a very good living. They need really good skills.”

Vintage Skateboard Found In City Of Keller Fire Hydrant Likely There For 50 Years

KELLER, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – The City of Keller found a skateboard from the 70s inside a fire hydrant in the 800 block of South Main Street near Wall Price-Keller Road.

(credit: City of Keller)

For years public works has had a continual pressure issue with the fire hydrant but wasn’t able to fully shut off flow to it. Despite replacing various pieces of the hydrant, they continued to have pressure and leaking issues so they decided to dig it up.

According to The Department of Public Works, the 27” water line was originally installed in 1972, and there’s a good chance the orange skateboard was in the line since then.

An explanation posted on the city’s Facebook page explains that “in the olden days, construction workers would use skateboards to travel the interior of water pipes to inspect welds and joints.”

Now that technology has moved beyond the first scientific pocket calculator (which debuted in 1972), they use cameras on wheels controlled by essentially an X-box controller for the task.

At some point in the last 50 years, according to the social media post, the skateboard broke into pieces and migrated from the  water line into the 6” water line that serves the fire hydrant, even navigating a 90-degree turn.
