Ones For Real Estate: The Elusive $400K North Texas Home

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) — While the median price of a home in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex sits at just under $360,000, according to real estate experts, researchers who study the market say houses in that price range have become increasingly hard to find.

Despite a market cool down following a housing frenzy this year and last researchers say homes within 300k to 400k are still elusive for those looking in that price range.

Dr. Luis Torres, a research economist from Texas A&M Real Estate Research Center said, “That sweet spot of 300-thousand to 400-thousand it’s still difficult to find homes. You have low month of inventory.”

As a matter of fact Torres says his data shows there is less than 2 months of inventory for those houses across DFW.

Dr. Torres added, “You would think there would be more available at that price range. Think about it it’s not that cheap 300-thousand to 400-thousand but it’s getting harder.”

Asked, why this is happening he said simply it has to do with demand.

He added, “It’s still affordable to people so that’s why there is demand for homes in that price range especially when you include the low mortgage rates—it’s affordable!”

In addition experts say construction of new homes in this price range is also still slowed, and not keeping up with demand.

Also, according to Dr. Torres, investors have gobbled up many of these homes because they are attractive to rent or flip.

Many homes in this price range are single family houses with 3 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms.

Dr. Torres does believe things will get better in the coming months.

He said, “I think it should improve in the coming year probably. Like at the end of this year and beginning of next year as the frenzy dissipates.”

Xavier Prather Leaves ‘Big Brother’ With $750,000 And Bonds That He Will ‘Absolutely Cherish Forever’

(CBS) – Another season of Big Brother is in the books and we have our newest winner, Xavier Prather. Prather, a lawyer from Kalamazoo, Michigan, took home the largest grand prize in Big Brother history last night – $750,000.

Today he spoke with CBS’ Matt Weiss to discuss becoming a part of Big Brother history, what it’s like to live on camera 24/7 and what he’ll take with him from the Big Brother experience (besides 3/4 of a million dollars).

MW- Hey Xavier, so tell me how’d it feel to wake up today with a whole lot more money in your pocket?

XP- Good day, might be an understatement. [Laughs] It’s a good feeling, you put in a lot of work and for it all to pay off, and to be a part of history is something special.

MW- Back in the real world you’re an attorney, do you feel like those skills helped you out on Big Brother?

XP- Absolutely. I felt like the skill set that you have when you are an attorney was ideal for the Big Brother house. Working as an attorney or just in the legal community, everyone knows that your network is huge, not only your ability to work well with others but your ability to incentivize others to want to work with you.

I was able to translate some of those skills and some of the networking skills into the Big Brother house to give myself a strong social game to position myself well in the house, not only within The Cookout but also outside.

MW- I’m sure you mentally prepared as best as you could but when you first stepped foot in the house, what’s that moment like?

XP- Oh, when I first stepped foot in the house, I was like, yes, there’s another bald black guy and I’m gonna be the only one sweating up storm, just fantastic [laughs]. But everything else, yeah it was a lot to take in.

MW- [Laughs] And what’s the experience having your life be live streamed 24/7?

XP- In a sense, and I think a lot of the other house guests will reiterate this as well, it’s just kind of like you have to be yourself. We all had to be ourselves, we’re all human, I’m sure we’ll all make mistakes, I’m sure we’ll all do things that we’ll watch and be like Ah that was cringe.

We were cast on the show because of who we are though and I think showing that through the live feeds is a unique experience. You see the good, you see the bad. The good you love and the bad you try to learn from.

MW- Is there any acclamation getting back to regular life now or does it feel like there’s still a camera pointed at you? Except for right now where there is literally still a camera pointed at you [laughs].

XP- [Laughs] Right. Yeah, like I mean for the first 20 minutes when I got my phone back I was trying to figure out how to hack into it because I had forgotten my passcode. I found out the Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA Finals, that was great.

I’m playing catch up right now and I feel like a caveman. It’s a lot. I’ve really got to get reacclimated with the world.

MW- What do you take from this experience now, aside from the $750,000?

XP- First and foremost that I’ve made bonds with people that I will absolutely cherish forever. Secondly, I think what we’ve proven this season is that when people come together with the same goal in mind they can accomplish historic things, incredible feats. I think the cookout proved that.

So for future alliances or just people in general, I think when people come together and really set their mind to doing something they can accomplish just about anything,

MW- Absolutely, well thank you for the time today Xavier. You played a great game and congratulations!

XP- I appreciate it, take care.

David Voce Compares ‘Survivor’ Adventure To A Drug: ‘It’s Going To Rock You To Your Core’

(CBS) – Episode two, castoff number three. Survivor is pulling no punches in season 41 as we already have our third elimination and this time it was neurosurgeon David Voce who had to watch Jeff Probst snuff out his flame.

CBS’ Matt Weiss spoke with Voce to discuss trying to sleep without clocks, competing on the island and what lead to his blindside elimination.

MW- Hello David! Sorry we’re talking a lot earlier than you had probably hope but you’re still part of a very small group of group who even get to the island so I hope you’re still proud of that. What was your reaction to setting foot on that island and living out a dream?

DV- So for me and several other people we were cast before COVID And then that all fell through and so to finally be out there, there was just this overwhelming excitement. Especially after COVID and quarantining and finally being free to be around people. You can feel just the the vibe, even from the crew, everyone was just so excited to be out there.

I lived a dream, even thought five days was way too short, it’s crazy how much of those five days are permanently seared into my memory now. It was just such an incredible experience and coming back and trying to describe it to people is hard. It’s literally like a drug where you get this high of being out there and then it’s taken away.

I feel like I need the next hit, it’s just an incredible adventure, a once-in-a-lifetime adventure and I’m really grateful for it.

MW- That’s a very unique thing like you said, being on the show during COVID. Obviously it’s far from everyday life but was there any sense of normalcy that at the very least you could be around people again?

DV- Survivor is not normal at all. [Laughs] Before going out there a lot of people would say Jeff has that line of it’s going to rock you to your core and people talk about mental health and it’s all true. We were on an island, it’s 24/7 non-stop living with people from all different walks of life, all different backgrounds, and being able to kind of create a society together.

Those taglines that we hear over and over again, that really is what it is. You know you don’t have the cell phones, computers, the work schedules everything that all goes out the window. It’s this weird society that’s happening, you go out there and it’s just this incredible microcosm that happens. It’s kind of mind boggling how quickly you fall into this small society that you’re creating. It really just kind of teaches you what’s important in life, and kind of resets your mind, how to kind of approach life.

MW- Even things like not knowing what time it is, I imagine that has to really throw you for a loop?

DV- The hardest part is waking up in the middle of the night. You feel pretty rested so you think it must be close to morning and then like 10 hours go by and it’s still dark out. You realize ok maybe it was only like 7pm. [Laughs]

MW- You also got to experience a few challenges, so walk me through what that’s like when you step up to that starting line?

DV- Yeah, I mean it’s adrenaline rush. You just have complete adrenaline pushing you through those challenges. It’s hard to describe how intense those challenges are. Everything is so heavy, everything is so intense.

You know that sweat challenge was way underrated, we almost didn’t finish, that was one of the hardest things I’ve done in my life. Our thighs were bloody from the chafing, we had scars all over the place. We were just completely wiped out.

So what you see on TV, just know it’s way harder. You think ‘oh I can do that, that’d be fun’ and then you get out there and it’s a totally different ballgame. You do have time to strategize, but it’s not a lot. So in that last challenge, the water challenge, you saw me in my underwear because I was supposed to actually swim and then last minute Tiffany said she could do the beam and they wanted me on a puzzle because I could do puzzles.

So everything just kind of is happening the way it happens because everything’s moving so fast. It’s incredible the out there but it’s also like, I’ve got to perform.

MW- And also like you said you’re doing it on not the best night’s sleep and very little food, so you’re mind isn’t really where it needs to be either I assume.

DV- Exactly, yeah. The best example of it is Tiffany last night, love her to death but what in the world happened? I mean she just lost all touch with reality.

What you saw was Liana be like this is idiotic, and Evie being like what is happening? Evie told Deshawn that Xander is going home, he has these idols and that’s why she told him everything. What you didn’t really see is when Evie got back from that trek she only had about five minutes with us, and that’s why she was like wait what, why does Tiffany, want to do this?

But there was no time and I think if there had been even a little more time Evie would have said, then let’s split the vote. Let’s do a two-one vote so that we can still get out Xander and if he plays something then Voce will go. So it just did not make sense, and you see that and Tiffany saying I don’t have any food I’m not thinking straight and just the paranoia and complete lack of any sense that set in.

MW- So when you are staring down that moment and you realize you might be going home, what was that moment like for you?

DV- Honestly, that was such a blindside. I knew as soon as the first vote was read and it was my vote for Tiffany I was like uh-oh. You never want to see your vote first. That’s kind of when I realized that and honestly, it was just devastation.

After you get voted out it’s kind of a whirlwind and you’re sitting there getting your final thoughts and this was a total blindside. I said at the time I guess it was my relationship maintenance but I actually take that back a little. At that point I just felt like I was close to people, I thought I had real bonds with people, and I did have those bonds with people.

It’s just that when stuff hit the fan, I didn’t actually realize that stuff was hitting the fan. I don’t think that that was a lack of self awareness, I think it was just a pure moment of Russian roulette mayhem. There were so many advantages, there were so many twists, it was just like this huge cluster. It was just a matter of where does the bullet go and it went for me, which sucks but that’s Survivor and that’s life

MW- Well hopefully we see you back out there sometime, like I said you still made it to the island which is a huge accomplishment in its own right. You handled yourself well out there and it was great catching up with you today!

DV- Thanks Matt, take care!

‘Army Training Kicked In’: Wild Video Shows Man Using Trash Can To Trap Gator Outside Florida Home

MOUNT DORA, Fla. (CBS) – A Florida man is receiving viral fame for using his military experience and incredible courage to trap a large alligator! Video from Instagram shows Eugene Bozzi grabbing his trash can after the gator showed up outside his neighbor’s front door in Orange County.

“Somebody got to step up and do something, we all got to look out for each other, right?” Bozzi said. “I was afraid when I had it in it. It was so powerful and I didn’t expect that, pushing itself out.”

After the gator was in the trash can, Bozzi maneuvered it toward a retention pond, pushing it over and high-tailing it up the hill. “Army training kicked in. Just get it done, drop him there and keep it moving,” said Bozzi, a Philadelphia native.

The video even caught the attention of CBS The Late Late Show host James Corden.

“Absolutely incredible! Very responsible, as well. Remember, always recycle your alligators,” Corden joked. “There’s a point where the alligator was right in there and struggling to get out, felt like 25 people filming that and not one of them like, ‘should we help him?'”

Bozzi only moved to Florida about a year ago. He admits catching a gator in a trash can may not be the way it’s supposed to be done.

Texas Teen Claims He Was Asleep When He Stabbed Twin Sister To Death

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – The 17-year-old boy accused of stabbing his twin sister to death in west Harris County claims he was sleeping as he stabbed his sister to death, KTRK-TV in Houston reports.

Benjamin Elliott is charged with murder after he was found by deputies early Wednesday morning, Sept. 29, in a bedroom of their home performing CPR on his sister, Meghan Elliott, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

Meghan Elliott had several stab wounds to her neck, Gonzalez said.

Benjamin Elliott claims he woke up between 2:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. and was in his sister’s bedroom with a knife in her neck and realized he wasn’t dreaming.

He removed the knife and sat it beside her before calling 911, according to claims made in court.

The 911 operator instructed Benjamin to perform CPR, which he was in the process of doing when deputies arrived at the home, according to Sheriff Gonzalez.

Moments after the initial call, the twins’ parents woke up and could be heard screaming, according to court records.

Sex Abuse Claimants Set To Vote On Boy Scouts Bankruptcy Plan

DOVER, Delaware (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – More than a year and a half after the Boy Scouts of America sought bankruptcy protection amid an onslaught of child sex abuse allegations, tens of thousands of men who say they were molested as children by scoutmasters and others will soon get a chance to vote on a BSA reorganization plan.

The Boy Scouts, based in Irving, Texas, sought bankruptcy protection in February 2020, seeking to stop hundreds of individual lawsuits and create a fund for men who say they were sexually abused as children.

Although the organization was facing 275 lawsuits at the time, it’s now facing more than 82,000 sexual abuse claims in the bankruptcy case.

Despite the plan being sent out to abuse claimants for a vote, there are several issues involving Boy Scouts insurers and local troop sponsoring organizations that remain unresolved.

Here is a look at where the case stands:

DISCLOSURE STATEMENT

Following a hearing that stretched over two weeks, a judge on Thursday, Sept. 30, approved a revised disclosure statement that outlines and explains the Boy Scouts’ reorganization plan.

Approval of the disclosure statement was required before the Boy Scouts could begin sending out ballots to abuse claimants and other creditors to vote on the plan.

Among the issues discussed at the disclosure statement hearing were provisions for ensuring that ballots and informational packages are sent to all claimants, including men who are incarcerated, while protecting the privacy of those who do not want Boy Scouts-related communications sent to their homes.

The judge and attorneys also discussed provisions to ensure that law firms that represent multiple abuse claimants and want to submit “master ballots” on behalf of their clients prove they have obtained permission from each client who does not wish to submit a ballot himself.

THE PLAN

The plan calls for the Boys Scouts and its roughly 250 local councils to contribute up to $820 million in cash and property into a fund for abuse claimants. They also would assign certain insurance rights to the fund. In return, the local councils and national organization would be released from further liability for sexual abuse claims.

The plan also includes settlement agreements involving one of the Boy Scouts’ major insurers, The Hartford, and its former largest troop sponsor, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon church. The Hartford has agreed to pay $787 million into the fund for abuse claimants, and the Mormons have agreed to contribute $250 million for abuse related to the church’s scouting programs. In exchange, both entities would be released from any further liability involving child sex abuse claims.

Attorneys for the Boy Scouts and abuse claimants say they still hope to reach settlements with other insurers and sponsoring organizations, but it’s unclear whether they will be successful.

COMPETING RECOMMENDATIONS

The official committee appointed by the U.S. bankruptcy trustee to represent and act in the best interest of all sexual abuse survivors is recommending that abuse claimants reject the Boy Scouts’ plan.

In a draft letter filed with the court, the nine abuse survivors on the committee said the plan is “grossly unfair,” and represents only a fraction of the settling parties’ potential liabilities and what they should and can pay.

According to the committee, a key flaw is that settlements with local Boy Scout councils would leave them with more than $1 billion in cash and property above what they need to fulfill the scouting mission. The committee also notes that sponsoring organizations such as churches and civic groups can avoid liability for abuse claims dating to 1976 simply by transferring their interests in insurance policies purchased by the BSA and local councils to the victims fund, without contributing any cash or property.

Meanwhile, attorneys separately representing tens of thousands of abuse claimants have submitted their own letter urging abuse claimants to vote for the plan. They say it will result in billions of dollars in compensation for abuse survivors and represents the best possible outcome for them.

The letter was drafted by attorneys representing an ad hoc group called the Coalition of Abused Scouts for Justice and the court-appointed advocate for those who might file claims in the future, including men who have repressed memories of their abuse. The coalition represents almost 18,000 abuse claimants and is affiliated with more than two dozen law firms that collectively represent more than 60,000 claimants.

TALLYING THE VOTE

A key point of contention has been a plan provision allowing an abuse claimant to receive an “expedited distribution” payment of $3,500, with virtually no questions asked, and avoid the claim evaluation process.

Such payments are expected to be an attractive option for those who have filed false claims, claims that lack required information and may not survive the claims evaluation process, and claims that would be barred in nonbankruptcy lawsuits because of the passage of time.

Those who do not opt for the $3,500 payments would have their claims scrutinized under trust distribution procedures, risking uncertain recoveries on an uncertain timetable in return for a potentially larger payment.

Attorneys for the official committee representing abuse victims have expressed concern that people opting for the $3,500 payments could improperly sway the vote in favor of the plan. The judge declined the committee’s request to approve two separate voting classes, one for those accepting the expedited payment and the other for those who don’t. She did order, however, that any claimant wanting to take the $3,500 payment must indicate so on his ballot.

“We’re going to know … whether the votes of the survivors who choose the $3,500 distribution swing the class,” the judge said last week.

CASE TIMELINE

With the judge’s approval of the disclosure statement, ballots and informational packages will be sent to more than 82,000 abuse claimants over the next two weeks. Ballots must be returned by Dec. 14, and a preliminary report on the voting results is due a week later. A final voting report is due by Jan. 4.

The judge has scheduled a hearing to begin on Jan. 24 to consider the voting results and to decide whether the plan meets the requirements of the bankruptcy code and should be approved.

NFL Week 4 NFC North Preview: ‘Bears Find A Way To Eke This One Out,’ Says CBS Chicago’s Marshall Harris

(CBS Chicago) — A familiar story may already be beginning to play out in the NFC North, with the Green Bay Packers sitting atop the division and the Detroit Lions still looking for their first win. In between, the Minnesota Vikings appear to be rounding into form, while the Chicago Bears are falling apart. At least that’s how things look from Week 3 in the NFL.

The Packers needed a last-minute drive and a last-second field goal to secure their second win. The Lions dropped their third, when the Baltimore Ravens beat them the same way. The Vikings put together a complete effort to overcome the Seattle Seahawks. But the Bears were over overwhelmed by the superior Cleveland Browns.

Week 4 matchups in the division could create some separation in the standings. Green Bay draws a battered and struggling Pittsburgh team. The Vikings host the Cleveland Browns, who are coming off another strong showing. And the Bears and Lions try to avoid the division cellar.

CBS Chicago sports director Marshall Harris looks at the three NFC North matchups.

All times listed are Eastern.

Stream your local NFL On CBS game live on Paramount+.

Cleveland Browns @ Minnesota Vikings, Sunday, October 3 @ 1:00 p.m.

The Browns are coming off a dominating 26-6 win over the Bears to improve their record to 2-1. The defense gave rookie quarterback Justin Fields fits in his first NFL start, sacking him nine times and knocking him down 15 times. Myles Garrett alone had 4.5 sacks, setting a franchise record. The Browns limited the Bears to a little over one yard per offensive play.

While the Browns deserve credit for the win — not to mention downing the Houston Texans to open the season and almost knocking off the Kansas City Chiefs in the opener — it’s still a little unclear how good this Cleveland team is. “I think we’re looking at a situation where the Browns are good,” Harris conceded. “But I don’t know how good they are, because I just saw them play a Bears team that looked like they had no clue what was going on on the football field on the offensive end.”

The Browns, on the other hand, have a good sense of what they want to do with the ball. And that is hand it to Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. The two combined for 165 yards on the ground on 32 carries. Mayfield continued to run the offense efficiently. And Odell Beckham Jr. returned to the lineup, hauling in five passes for another 77 yards.

The Vikings are coming off a strong performance of their own, topping the Seattle Seahawks 30-17. Quarterback Kirk Cousins continued to look comfortable in the pocket, tossing three touchdowns passes in the first half and ultimately completing 30-38 for 323 yards. Running Back Dalvin Cook sat out with an ankle injury, but Alexander Mattison put up 112 yards on 26 carries and caught six passes for 59 yards out of the backfield on a busy afternoon.

“I’m interested to see if Kirk Cousins can really say they’ve made a move to doing more positive things,” Harris said. “I think this is going to be a tightly contested game. It’s a real proving ground for the Browns to go on the road to try to beat Minnesota. But I really believe that the Vikings are going to win this game, somehow, some way in a tight one.”

Detroit Lions @ Chicago Bears, Sunday, October 3 @ 1:00 p.m.

The Bears were embarrassed by the Browns in Week 3, at least on offense, where they couldn’t do anything. They held their own on defense, sacking Baker Mayfield five times and holding Cleveland to 10 points in the first half. They’ll have an easier matchup when they host the winless Lions in Week 4. But nothing about the Bears so far inspires confidence.

That starts at quarterback, where injuries have created a potential revolving door. “I don’t know who the Bears are going to start at quarterback,” Harris admitted. “We’re told by Matt Nagy that they don’t know who the Bears are going to start a quarterback. Of course it depends on the injury to Andy Dalton, who missed last week with a knee injury. And Justin Fields, if you take nine sacks, you might get hit a few times, in a way that you don’t want to. He’s got a dinged-up hand, so we’ll see how that shakes out. Nick Foles, you know, Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles, could be the starter for the Bears after being your third-string quarterback to start the season. We’ll just have to see how the injuries play out.”

Whoever it is will need some help. The Bears offense put up a measly 114 yards last week, and that’s before netting out sacks and penalties. A lot of that burden falls on coaches putting their players in a position to succeed. And that didn’t happen last week.

“Matt Nagy says he doesn’t want to reveal who is going to call plays,” Harris said. “It probably should not be him. Expect Bill Lazor, the offensive coordinator, to take over the play-calling. If he doesn’t, Matt Nagy could very well be coaching for his job. Not that he’ll get fired next week, but for all intents and purposes, this could be his last go-round with the Bears, if they lose to a winless Detroit Lions team.”

The Lions lost to the Baltimore Ravens last week in maybe the most heartbreaking way possible. Jared Goff drove Detroit well into field goal range in the game’s final minutes, allowing them to take the lead with a field goal. But Lamar Jackson brought his Ravens back just far enough for Justin Tucker to kick a record-setting 66-yard game-winning field goal.

Lost in the excitement is that the Lions were able to stay with the Ravens and could easily have won. Baltimore moved the ball, but the Detroit defense largely contained Jackson and mostly kept the Ravens out of the end zone. Jared Goff was an efficient 22-30 for 217 yards.

The Lions can probably expect another close one in Chicago. “That’s not how they want to end the game,” Harris said of the Lions’ loss. “But with the Bears, we don’t even know where they’re going to start, or more specifically, who they’re going to start. But I think, because it is a home game, the Bears find a way to eke this one out. And I do mean eke it out, 13-10.”

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Green Bay Packers, Sunday, October 3 @ 4:25 p.m.

The Steelers and Packers seem to be heading in opposite directions. The Steelers looked lifeless in losing 24-10 to a Cincinnati Bengals team that’s long been the AFC North punching bag. The Packers looked just the opposite, coming back to knock off the San Francisco 49ers with a walk-off field goal.

Ben Roethlisberger completed 38 passes for 318 yards, but mostly of the short variety. Najee Harris hauled in 14 of them out of the backfield. The running game was non-existent behind a makeshift offensive line that couldn’t get out of its own way. Big Ben was sacked four times and knocked down five more.

“Here in Chicago, we know a little thing or two about 39-year-old future Hall of Famers trying to hold on to that last bit of glory,” Harris said. “That’s what’s going on right now under center for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger is washed. I think I can say that with a degree of confidence and the tape will bear that out. The thing is can Mike Tomlin and the Steelers do anything about it to have them win more football games?”

It won’t be easy against a Packers team firing on all cylinders. That starts with Aaron Rodgers, who after a dud of a game to open the season, is back to his old ways. Rodgers completed 23 passes for 253 yards, two TDs and a passer rating of 113.3. He found Adams a total of 12 times for 132 yards. Aaron Jones averaged an effective 4.3 yards per carry on his 19 carries. The defense pushed around Jimmy Garoppolo, sacking him four times and hitting him 11 more.

The Packers are favored by a touchdown, but it may not end up that close. “I think he (Rodgers) is going to be in a position where he maybe throws the ball 25 times at the most, goes for three or four touchdowns and they cruise in this game,” said Harris. “I’m going to say 31-10, giving Pittsburgh the benefit of doubt that somehow, some way they get into the end zone. But this one has all the potential to get ugly, because like I said, Ben Roethlisberger doesn’t look like he should be still playing in the NFL.”

(CBS Local Sports)– Week 5 of the college football season is here, and CBS Sports Network has a slate of some of the best games across the nation this weekend. The action begins on Friday, October 1 when #13 BYU and quarterback Jaren Hall travel to enemy territory to take on Utah State. The Cougars haven’t lost a game yet and have scored at least 20 points in every single game this season.

CBS Local’s DJ Sixsmith spoke with CBS Sports college football host Brent Stover to get his thoughts on the big time matchup and a whole host of games on Saturday, October 2, which includes an intriguing matchup between two 3-1 teams in Liberty and UAB. Stover explains why he likes BYU on Friday, what Liberty will need to do to win on the road and the expectations for Fresno State in Hawai’i.

#13 BYU vs. Utah State: Friday, October 1, 9pm EST/PST CBS Sports Network

“It’s probably one of the best matchups we’ve had on CBS Sports Network this year,” said Stover. “I like BYU and last year was not a mirage and I think they’ve proven that through the first third of the season. I think the quarterback situation is the big question. It sounds like Jaren Hall was all but ready to go last week. I expect him to start, but Baylor Romney was awesome. He threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns. I think BYU is going to be a little bit too much for Utah State, but the Aggies are off to a great start as well. I think it is going to be a fantastic game, and with home field, it probably evens it out a bit. I would pick BYU in this game.”

Western Michigan vs. Buffalo: Saturday, October 2, 12pm EST/PST CBS Sports Network

“It’s interesting because Western Michigan is off to a good start, and it’s good to get conference play going in the MAC,” said Stover. “You can kind of wipe the slate clean a little bit for Buffalo, because they’ve been a little bit up and down. They looked terrible against Nebraska and bounced back since then. This is a tough matchup for me to pick as well, but with Buffalo you have to look at that running game. They’re scoring 33 points per game, and that’s second in the MAC. Kevin Marks is back this year with Dylan McDuffie. I think Buffalo has an opportunity perhaps to win the MAC, but this is a big opportunity against Western Michigan to get things going.”

UCF vs. Navy: Saturday, October 2, 3:30pm EST/PST CBS Sports Network

“Navy is just not there. Go back over the last half of last season and the first three games of this season, and it’s hard to pinpoint what might be going on,” said Stover. “Ken Niumatalolo has built such a phenomenal culture there, and all he has done is won games, but something is just not right for them. UCF got that great win to open the year against Boise State, and they have an extra week to prepare coming off that loss to Louisville, and I don’t think Louisville is any slouch. I like Dillon Gabriel. He is one of my favorite quarterbacks in the country. If you look over his career, he wins games, and he is not one who plays down to his competition. He’s thrown 42 touchdowns in 16 conference games with only eight interceptions. He doesn’t make mistakes, and he’s good for the big play and deep ball. I think UCF has a big advantage in this game, even though it is on the road.

Liberty vs. UAB: Saturday, October 2, 7pm EST/PST CBS Sports Network

“My guy Kevin Carter, who I work with on Fridays and Saturdays, thought Malik Willis should’ve been in the top five for the Heisman last year, and I can’t disagree,” said Stover. “He’s an Auburn transfer, and he played there in 2017 and 2018, and he was phenomenal last year. The beauty of Willis is he is one of these typical dual-threat guys that a lot of people maybe haven’t paid enough attention to because he is at a school like Liberty. He’s only run for 274 yards and four touchdowns this year, and he’s already thrown for over 800 yards and 10 touchdowns and no interceptions. The guy doesn’t make mistakes. They came up just short last time out, and they’re 3-1. With UAB, we know what Bill Clark has done there, and this is a brand new stadium. These folks have been waiting for a long time, and this program was dead. Not only is it back and not only are they contending for conference titles, but they’ve got an incredible downtown stadium in Birmingham. I think it is going to go down to the wire. This one is tough to pick for me, but it’s going to be exciting. And I think there are going to be a lot of points and a lot of yards. These are two really exciting teams to watch.”

#18 Fresno State vs. Hawai’i: Saturday, October 2, 10:30pm EST/PST CBS Sports Network

“What fascinates me is that when you go to Hawai’i, it’s not a foregone conclusion just because of the trip,” said Stover. “That’s just the way that it is. One advantage that the Warriors have is they’ve already played five games. They could be tired, but playing at home and having five games under your belt gives you the advantage there. Jake Haener is one of the best quarterbacks in the country. Not only did he beat UCLA with a game-winning drive, but he showed toughness on the field with a hurt left side the whole time. Last week they were a little bit sluggish in the first half, but then in the second half we saw what they can do. I’m not as concerned with the UNLV game as a lot of people might be. It’s human nature to have a letdown, and Fresno State had that letdown. But the bottom line is they won the game. They’re 4-1, and their only loss is to a top three team in Oregon. This Fresno State team for my money — and I think Nevada and Boise State might have something to say about that — Fresno State is the best team in the Mountain West. Right now outside of Cincinnati, I would pick them to be the best Group of Five team.”

Smith & Wesson Moving From Massachusetts To Tennessee, Citing Proposed Massachusetts Gun Laws

BOSTON (CBS) – Smith & Wesson, one of the oldest gun manufacturers in the country, announced Thursday it is moving operations from Springfield, Massachusetts to Tennessee due to proposed gun laws in Massachusetts.

The company plans to move to Maryville, Tenn. In 2023 after being based in Springfield since it was founded in 1852.

“This has been an extremely difficult and emotional decision for us, but after an exhaustive and thorough analysis, for the continued health and strength of our iconic company, we feel that we have been left with no other alternative,” President and CEO Mark Smith said.

Smith said proposed legislation in Massachusetts would prevent the company from making certain kinds of guns.

“These bills would prevent Smith & Wesson from manufacturing firearms that are legal in almost every state in America and that are safely used by tens of millions of law-abiding citizens every day exercising their Constitutional 2nd Amendment rights, protecting themselves and their families, and enjoying the shooting sports,” Smith said. “While we are hopeful that this arbitrary and damaging legislation will be defeated in this session, these products made up over 60% of our revenue last year, and the unfortunate likelihood that such restrictions would be raised again led to a review of the best path forward for Smith & Wesson.”

Smith said the company vetted several cities before deciding to move its headquarters, which includes 750 jobs, to Maryville.

As part of the move, Smith & Wesson will close Connecticut and Missouri facilities as well, consolidating the number of locations from four to three.

CDC Issues Health Alert For Pregnant Women Regarding COVID-19

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a new health alert urging pregnant and nursing women to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

According to the CDC, as of September 27 more than 125,000 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported in pregnant patients, including more than 22,000 hospitalized cases and 161 deaths.

In August alone 22 pregnant patients died from COVID-19.

That’s the highest number since the pandemic began.

According to the health alert, the data from the COVID-19-Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network (COVID-NET) in 2021 indicate that approximately 97% of pregnant people hospitalized (either for illness or for labor and delivery) with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were unvaccinated.

As of September 18, about 31% of pregnant people were fully vaccinated before or during their pregnancy.

“This is the way we protect ourselves,” said Dr. Joseph Chang, the Chief Medical Officer at Parkland Health and Hospital System. “This is the way we protect our babies.”

Dr. Chang is also an OB/GYN.

He explained that pregnancy can slightly weaken the immune system, making patients more vulnerable to severe illness.

He said the benefits of being vaccinated far outweigh the risks.

“We’ve actually seen the data get better, not worse, in terms of safety profile and effectiveness,” Dr. Chang said.

Dr. Chang recommended women speak with their healthcare provider if they have questions about the vaccine.

Planned Parenthood Files Texas Supreme Court Emergency Request Challenging New Abortion Ban

AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM) — Planned Parenthood affiliates in Texas filed an emergency request on September 29 asking the Texas Supreme Court to intervene in the ongoing case against Texas Right to Life, challenging Senate Bill 8, the state’s six-week abortion ban.

Earlier in September Planned Parenthood was granted a temporary injunction against the group, which blocked it from suing abortion providers and health care workers at Planned Parenthood centers in Texas under SB 8.

Later, at the request of Texas Right to Life, the Texas Multidistrict Litigation Panel stepped in and stayed all ongoing challenges to SB 8 in state court indefinitely. The move was made despite the fact that a hearing in Planned Parenthood’s case, where it asked the court to declare SB 8 unconstitutional, was scheduled for October 13.

Planned Parenthood says intervention by the state Supreme Court is ‘urgently and immediately needed’ because SB 8 ‘continues to cause unprecedented harm on the ground, blocking Texans from accessing their constitutional right to abortion’.

“For almost a month, Texans have been forced to either continue an unwanted pregnancy or travel hundreds of miles to access care that they should be able to get in their home state,” said Helene Krasnoff, with Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “We’re urging the Texas Supreme Court to step in and move this critical case along so we can restore access to abortion across the state.”

The U.S. Supreme Court allowed SB 8 to take effect on September 1, 2021. The law prohibits abortions in Texas as early as six weeks — when a fetal heartbeat is detected and before most women know they are pregnant — and allows for private citizens, in Texas or elsewhere, to sue abortion providers or anyone else who may have helped someone get an abortion after the limit.

According to Planned Parenthood, since SB 8 took effect, abortion has been virtually inaccessible for the 7 million women of reproductive age living in Texas.

Teen Father Charged With Murder Of Newborn Son In North Texas, Bond Set At $2M

CARROLLTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – A 17-year-old from Carrollton who fathered a son born in July is now charged with murder for the infant’s death, Carrollton Police announced Tuesday, Sept. 28.

Detectives arrested Caleb Blake Brown of Carrollton Tuesday morning.

Caleb Blake Brown (Denton County Jail)

Brown and the baby’s mother, also 17, brought their three-week-old son to the emergency room at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano on August 9, when the mother noticed the baby had become pale and had significant bruising around his abdomen.

The newborn was transferred to Children’s Medical Center of Dallas where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy later revealed that at 24 days old, Emerson Ziesmer suffered multiple displaced ribs and a lacerated liver.

During the subsequent investigation, detectives found evidence indicating Brown was angry at the child’s mother for keeping the baby and was concerned about having to pay child support.

According to the probable cause affidavit for his arrest warrant, Brown said while he was briefly alone with the infant on the afternoon of August 9, he squeezed him and repeatedly threw him into the air, eventually hitting the ceiling fan.

Brown is held in the Denton County Jail where his bond has been set at $2 million.

Hoarse Tom Brady Sounds Sick, And He Doesn’t Know Why: ‘Very Strange’

TAMPA, Fla. (CBS) — There’s lots of talk surrounding Tom Brady’s much-anticipated game in New England against the Patriots. Brady spoke to the media on Thursday afternoon, but talking was something he was struggling to do himself.

The 44-year-old Buccaneers quarterback gave his weekly press conference for the media in Tampa, and immediately, his raspy voice was startling to hear. Brady has had some on-and-off rasp over the past couple of months, but Thursday certainly sounded like the sickest he’s been.

After answering a few questions, Brady was finally asked about the condition of his throat.

“I don’t know. I’ve had a few of these days. I don’t know what the deal is, so I gotta try to figure this out,” Brady said. “I said my throat’s more tired than arm. Imagine that.”

Brady was reminded by a reporter that he had a similar hoarseness to his voice in the summer. “Same thing — I know,” Brady said. “It came back. I know. Very strange. Something must be a little — I can’t explain that, so.”

Later, when asked if he’ll be having family at the game Sunday night against the Patriots in Foxboro, he joked that perhaps the hectic schedule of the first four weeks of the season has contributed to his condition.

“A lot — first four weeks have been tough on me. The home opener, and then California [last week], Patriots. So after this I’m like, done for the year,” Brady said. “I’m tired of it, so maybe that’s the problem with my voice.”

It’s not the first time that Brady has sounded hoarse before a big game. He was sick in the days leading up to Super Bowl XLIX against the Seahawks. He ended up winning that game, turning in a fourth quarter for the ages to win his first Super Bowl in a decade. So he’s likely not too worried about how his current sore throat will impact his performance on Sunday night at Gillette Stadium.

Dog With ‘Constant Smile’ Needs Serious Donations For Neurological Condition

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KOVR-TV) –  Jasper, an eight-pound Chihuahua mix, is gifted or cursed with a constant smile.  He can play like the rest of them and give you snuggles too, but what really captures everyone’s heart, is his smile.

“I think everyone that sees him just instantly smiles,” says Haley Waugh, Front Street Animal Shelter Public Information Coordinator. “It’s kind of the first thing you notice when you see him is he has a big old smile on his face.”

Waugh says Jasper has nerve damage that prompts facial expressions mimicking a smile. “We think that he has some neurological issues going on,” she tells KOVR-TV in Sacramento.

Jasper’s facial nerves pull his muscles back causing his ears to perk up and give him a constant smile.  Waugh says tests and treatments will be very expensive.  The shelter posted video of Jasper on Facebook, hoping for donations.

“So far it’s looking like it will be around $4,000, but that could add up to more depending on how much treatment he needs and it could be ongoing,” adds Waugh.

For now, the goal is keeping Jasper as comfortable as possible so when he does flash those pearly whites he’s doing it out of happiness. “He might not have the most time left but we’re going to do whatever we can to make the best of it and give him as much time here as we can as comfortably as possible,” says Waugh.

Once they nail down what condition causes that constant canine smile, they’re hoping to find Jasper treatment and a permanent home.

They believe he’s about three-years-old and gets along with other dogs with no behavioral concerns. If you’d like to help, you can donate online.

Former Lubbock Private School President Larry Tye Rogers Sentenced To 5 ½ Years For Child Pornography

LUBBOCK, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Former Lubbock Christian School president Larry Tye Rogers, 56, pleaded guilty in June to possession of child pornography. He was sentenced Thursday to 5 1/2 years in federal prison  by U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix.

According to plea papers, Rogers admitted that in October 2020, his wife caught him surreptitiously taking photographs of a 15-year-old girl as she was naked in the bathroom preparing to shower. Rogers, who was found on his hands and knees holding his iPhone under the opening at the bottom of the door, admitted to his wife that he’d taken several photos and videos of the child in the bathroom. He later admitted his intended focus was the child’s genitals and pubic area, and that the images were designed to elicit a sexual response in Rogers.

Shortly thereafter, a colleague confronted him about his conduct. Rogers dropped his head and confirmed that he had taken photos of a minor female, and suggested that he should resign his position as president of Lubbock Christian School.

In addition to his sentence, Rogers will have to have to register as a sex offender.

The Lubbock Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Dallas Field Office – Lubbock Resident Agency, and Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stephen Rancourt and Callie Woolam prosecuted the case.

Authorities Credit Coverage Of Gabby Petito Case With Helping Find Remains Of Missing Texas Man

WESTERN WYOMING (CBSDFW.COM/CNN) — A rescue team in Wyoming is crediting the attention paid to the Gabby Petito case with helping them find remains believed to be that of a 46-year-old Texas man who has been missing for more than a month.

Remains matching the description of Robert “Bob” Lowery were found September 28 at the base of Teton Pass, in the same area — Bridger-Teton National Forest — where Petito’s remains were found. The father of two from Houston reportedly traveled to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on August 19.

An image of missing Texan Robert Lowery. (credit: Teton County Wyo. Sheriff’s Office)

Lowery, 46, was last seen on August 20 carrying a black duffel bag and having a sleeping bag and tent, according to the Teton County Sheriff’s Office. He was said to be on the Black Canyon Trail in the forest, near Grand Teton National Park. The trail is popular with hikers and mountain bikers in the summer, according to police.

In the days since Petito was reported missing, her story has made national headlines, spurring digital detectives to comb through her online trail to try to solve the case.

The story has also further highlighted the tens of thousands of missing persons stories that do not garner such intense interest; there were nearly 90,000 active missing person cases in the US as of the end of 2020, according to the National Crime Information Center.

A Break In The Case

An investigation into Lowery’s whereabouts had been ongoing but due to new tips, a search and rescue team was deployed Tuesday, according to a news release from Teton County Search and Rescue.

“The widespread news coverage of the Gabby Petito search helped bring light to Lowery’s case, and resulted in at least two members of the public calling local authorities this past weekend with new information about his possible last seen point,” the search and rescue team said.

Remains matching Lowery’s description were discovered with the help of volunteer hikers and a search dog team.

“At about 1 p.m., a dog team located a body and black Nike duffel bag significantly off trail on a steep, wooded slope,” reads the news release. “Collectively, the search teams hiked more than 75 miles and covered 22,500 feet in elevation.”

The cause of death is under investigation.

Mexican Government: Body Disposal Site Found Outside Nuevo Laredo, Near Texas Border

MEXICO CITY (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Officials in Mexico say they have found an apparent long-running “extermination site” outside the northern border city of Nuevo Laredo, near the border with Texas.

The location is being investigated within the context of dozens of reported disappearances along a segment of the highway connecting Nuevo Laredo and Monterrey since 2012, the National Search Commission said.

“The characteristics of the place allow the inference that it is an extermination site that has been used for years and until very recently, which will have to be confirmed by experts,” the commission’s statement said. “This is the first site of these dimensions found in Nuevo Laredo.”

Searchers found burned human remains on the ground, multiple possible clandestine graves and a clandestine crematorium, it said.

Drug cartels frequently use such sites to burn or dissolve the bodies of their victims.

Located across the border from Laredo, Texas, Nuevo Laredo has been dominated for years by the Northeast Cartel, a fragment of the old Zetas cartel.

The head of the government’s National Search Commission, Karla Quintana, had told the W Radio station Tuesday that a “clandestine crematorium of considerable size” had been found just outside Nuevo Laredo, along with burned bone fragments. She said it had been set up and operated years ago, but had also recently been used.

Families of dozens of people who went missing on the highway between Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo this year expressed anger at the report, complaining that they had not been informed of the situation.

Angelica Orozco, who leads the relatives’ group United Forces for Our Disappear in Nuevo Leon state, which borders Nuevo Laredo, said Wednesday that “it is very worrisome for us that the commission has come out with such alarmist statements without informing us.”

Her group said in a statement Tuesday that “these statements totally re-victimize, and cause anguish and torture for the relatives of the disappeared,” because many may assume their loved ones may have been killed and burned there.

The commission’s statement Wednesday night called for the inclusion of families of the missing in the efforts to investigate the site.

At least 71 people went missing earlier this year as they drove on the highway between the industrial hub of Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo. The victims include at least a half dozen U.S. residents.

Most of the missing are men who drove trucks or taxis on a road that local media have dubbed “the highway of death.” But the missing also include women and children and men driving private cars. Activists say about a half dozen men have reappeared alive and badly beaten after being abducted on the highway, and all they will say is that armed men forced them to stop on the highway and took their vehicles.

Quintana said earlier this year the disappearances may be related to turf battles between the Jalisco and Northeast cartels.

Raymundo Ramos, a human rights activist in Nuevo Laredo, said authorities have released little information about the discovery, but that in the past such sites have been found with large metal drums where bodies are soaked in diesel and burned beyond recognition.

“They should guarantee that (victim’s) relatives have access to the information,” Ramos said of authorities.

Despite alerts from relatives of the missing in May, the state government of Nuevo Leon, where Monterrey is located, didn’t warn people against traveling on the highway until almost a month later, activists say. Authorities have since increased policing and security on the highway.

Denton Police Arrest Tony Mason For Shooting And Killing His Roommate Isaiah Harpe

DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) — A man was found shot several times in a Denton apartment on September 26, now the person police say is responsible is in custody.

Denton police arrested Tony Mason in connection to the murder that happened in the 1900 block of North Ruddell Street. According to investigators, Mason confessed to shooting his roommate, Isaiah Dre’von Harpe, in the apartment they shared.

Late Wednesday evening, investigators arrested Mason in Fort Worth on an outstanding warrant for unlawful possession of a firearm by felon and a firearm was found in his possession at the time of the arrest. The 38-year-old was transported back to the Denton Jail without incident.

(credit: Denton Police Department)

During an interview police say Mason provided a full confession, saying he shot Harpe over and over after the two got into an argument. He also allegedly said that the firearm investigators recovered during his arrest was the firearm he used to kill his roommate.

Mason is charged with murder and remains in the Denton Jail.

Denton police said they are ‘grateful’ to all the witnesses and members of the public who came forward and provided tips in the case.

Mom Says Fort Worth ISD COVID-19 Policies Keeping Her Children At Home More Than At School

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – More than six weeks into the Fort Worth ISD school year, one parent says her children have only attended approximately two weeks in person.

Grace Atherton said the current quarantine response protocols are not working for her 2nd and 5th graders.

“They went week one and then they were quarantined,” she said. “They were able to go back to school and were in school for four days and then they were quarantined for the second time. They went back for four more days I believe, might have been five, and they were quarantined for the third time.”

According to Fort Worth ISD’s website, after a COVID-19 case is confirmed students determined to be close contacts are advised to quarantine for 10 days.

There are some exceptions.

District-wide, since the start of the school year there’s been more than 11,000 close contacts on campuses.

Atherton said the past year and a half has already caused learning loss concerns, but now the situation has intensified.

“They haven’t learned anything,“ she said. “The only kind of schooling they’re getting while not at school is sending work home or they’re posting it on their Chromebooks, but there’s no lesson plan. There’s no structure. There’s no support. There’s no help. It’s just here’s the work do it.”

She’s pushing for another option, whether that be virtual school or even a mask mandate which she believes would decrease cases. She said she’s reached out to district officials and Governor Abbott asking them to consider this.

“This isn’t just a problem with me, my friends, my friends’ children, my school.. it’s all of our children,” she said. “It’s our future. This is our future generation and they’re not being able to get an education. It’s been hard. It’s been really difficult.”

2 Dallas Firefighters Remain In Intensive Care Following Apartment Complex Explosion

DALLAS (CBSFW.COM) – Questions, fears and prayers after a mysterious explosion at a South Dallas apartment complex seriously injured eight people including four Dallas firefighters, Wednesday, Sept. 29.

One building partially collapsed and will be demolished.

There were reports of a natural gas leak at the time but Wednesday night, Atmos Energy insisted its system was working properly.

Sources told CBS 11 that two of the three firefighters are still hospitalized in intensive care with significant third degree burns.

They are getting the best care in Parkland Hospital’s burn unit while the investigation continues into what led to the explosion.

For the residents, it’s also been a traumatic time.

Paul Randall grabbed his 2-month-old grand baby and started running when it happened after 10:00 a.m. at the Meadow Creek apartments.

“When I came outside I thought each unit was about to start blowing up so that’s why I started running up the hill,” said Randall.

His family is among 200 displaced from their units who tonight are depending on the Red Cross for dinner and temporary housing.

“Wee don’t even know we’re gonna stay out tonight,” he said. “We don’t even know where we are going to lay our head tonight.”

Resident Lekeisha Williams suffered cuts from the blast which she says happened after Dallas firefighters responded to concerns about a natural gas odor and tried to break into a unit.

“One of the first responders, she went out there to the fire truck to get something out of there I guess to open the door to go in,” said Williams. “As soon as she did that to the door the apartment just blew up.”

Four firefighters were rushed to Parkland Hospital where they were initially listed in critical condition.

But the city’s fire chief revealed that they are all expected to survive along with the others injured.

“There is no such thing as a routine call and at any given moment the health and safety of our brave men and women can be placed at extreme risk,” said Chief Dominique Artis.

The City of Dallas promised an investigation in a statement.

Atmos energy is deflecting blame in a statement:

This morning, Atmos Energy was called by Dallas Fire-Rescue to the scene of an apartment complex on Highland Hills Drive in Dallas. After verifying that gas was shut off to the meter that supplies the apartment complex, our highly trained technicians began performing safety checks of Atmos Energy’s system. Atmos Energy has verified that our system is operating as expected, and we have found no indication that our system was involved.

The city is encouraging people interested in helping the affected families to donate to the Red Cross on the Dallas Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund.
